Sheikh Ubaidullah

Sheikh UbaidullahThe Ottoman leadership’s removal of the Kurdish emirs had unsetting repercussions for Kurdish society.
The emirs had often acted as mediators between different tribes, helping to peacefully solve despites over land . Without the calming influence of the emirs, Kurdish tribes fought constantly and disrupted trade in region. The ottoman governors could do little to prevent the upheavals. Religion leaders known as sheikh gradually filled the role of mediator in Kurdish society. One of the most popular Sheikh was Sheikh Ubaidullah of Shamdinan, who was supported by Kurds in Ottoman and Persian territory. Sheikh supported the establishment of a Kurdish nation. There was talk the Armenians would be getting their own independent state and the Sheikh wanted to make sure the Kurds weren’t forgotten or dismissed.
In 1880 Sheikh Ubaidullah and his sons led a rebellion against Persian after the shah’s local governors had punished Kurdish tribal chiefs. Ubaidullah hoped that the revolt would lead to an independent Kurdistan. Overlooking his endorsement of Kurdish nationalism, the Ottomans supported the Sheikh against their Persian rivals. During the revolt, Kurdish forces gained control of a large area between Lake Urmiah and Lake Van. When the Persians fought back, the sheikh looked to the Ottomans for support but didn’t receive any.
The Kurds in the Ottoman territory helped as much as they could, but they had to protect their own land.
eventually, Ottoman and Persian armies crushed the sheikh’s revolt with the help of rival Kurdish tribes. The Ottomans assisted the Persians because they feared that Sheikh Ubaidullah was growing too powerful.
His forces fled, were captured, or were killed. The sheikh was exiled and died in Hejaz, Saudi Arabia , in 1883.
